Mr. Michael Croghan Jr.

Mr. Michael J. Croghan Jr., 85, died Sunday, October 1, 2006, at his home in Braddock Heights, Maryland. He was the husband of the late Anna Margaret (Anders) Croghan.

Born August 31, 1921, in Frederick, Maryland, he was the son of the late Michael J. Sr. and Hilda Brown Croghan. Mr. Croghan was a graduate of the Frederick High School, class of 1938. Following high school, he was employed at the Farmers and Mechanics Bank of Frederick until the fall of 1941, when Mr. Croghan enlisted into the Maryland State Guard and would further serve his country during World War II in the United States Army, 31st Infantry "Dixie" finance division association. In 1946, Mr. Croghan would return home to Frederick and return to work for the Frederick Farmers and Mechanics Bank, where he met his future wife, Anna Margaret Anders. They married on June 12, 1948. Mr. and Mrs. Croghan together were most remembered owning and operating the Hotel Frederick and Catering Services until 1972.

Mr. Croghan was a life member of St. John the Evangelist Church of Frederick; former past president of the Maryland Hotel Association; an active member of the Frederick Chamber of Commerce, Frederick Lions Club and Lions Club bowling league; a life member of the VFW Post 3285 of Frederick; a life member of the American Legion, Francis Scott Key Post 11, Frederick; and an honorary 2006 award recipient of the Braddock Heights Historical Society. Mr. Croghan enjoyed his avid stamp collecting with the Hagerstown and Walkersville Stamp Clubs and his many hours volunteering as a driver for patients at the American Cancer Society. He had a love for music, especially opera, and he loved his many trips traveling with his late wife throughout the United States to numerous family and military reunions.

Mr. Croghan is survived by his five daughters, Ann Calkins and husband Jack of Piscataway, N.J., Jane Jones and husband Bill of Baltimore, Ellen Hendrickson Lewis and husband Wesley of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Nancy Cleary and husband John of Lisheen, Ireland, and Laura Metcalf and husband Gene of Braddock Heights; six grandchildren, Christopher and Kevin Calkins, Katie Hendrickson and Sean, Sara and Nathan Jones; three sisters, Frances Rebert, Patricia Warner and Kathleen Tolar; and one brother, John T. Croghan.

Mr. Croghan was preceded in death by one sister, Sarah Mason.

The family will receive friends Thursday, October 5, 2006, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Keeney and Basford P.A. Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, Md. Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 6, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the St. John the Evangelist Church, 118 East Second Street, Frederick, Md. Father Wayne G. Funk will officiate. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro.
